Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve

  • 07/12/2020

The Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve is Nepal's only hunting reserve. It is around a day's journey west of Pokhara in the Dhaulagiri region. It is bordered by the districts of Rukum, Myagdi, and Baglung. In 1983, the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve was formed. The reserve's management goals allow for sports hunting while also preserving a typical high-altitude ecology in West Nepal.

The reserve covers 1325 square kilometers. It is also the country's only hunting reserve for blue sheep and other game animals, serving both Nepalese and foreign hunters. The elevation ranges from 3000 meters to beyond 7000 meters. Forests, marshland (named hor), and flat meadows (called pan) make up the scenery and throughout the winter, the highest elevations stay snow-covered.

There are 36 indigenous flowering plant species. Fir, pine, birch, rhododendron, hemlock, oak, juniper, and spruce are all common plant species. At higher elevations, pasturelands cover more than half of the reserve's total area. The reserve is one of the best places to see blue sheep, a prized treasure. Leopard, goral, serow, Himalayan tahr, Himalayan black bear, barking deer, wild boar, rhesus macazue, langur, and mouse hare are among the other 18 mammal species found here. The koklass pheasant, cheer pheasant, and impeyan pheasant are among the 137 bird species that call the reserve home. Pheasants and partridge are plentiful, and the reserve's viable population allows for controlled hunting. Musk deer, Wolf, Red panda, Cheer pheasant, and Daphne are among the reserve's endangered species.

A hunting license is required for hunting management purposes, For this, the reserve is divided into six blocks.Wild animals exists in large amount in the Seng and Sundaha blocks. On all sides save the north, the reserve is bordered by communities. Local residents rely on the reserve for their timber, fuelwood, fodder, and pasture needs. Other locations of interest include Dhorbaraha, a Hindu sacred site near Dhorpatan on the banks of the Uttarganga River. A religious fair is held here every year on the day of "Janai Purnima" in August, which is visited by many local believers. The views of Dhaulagiri Himal from the Barse, Dogari, and Gustang bocks are breathtaking.
