Godawari: National Botanical Garden

The National Botanical Garden of Nepal, commonly known as Godawari Botanical Garden is located approximately 16 KM south east from central Kathmandu. The botanical garden was established in 1962 AD and designed by two British designers G.A.C. Herklots and Tony Schilling. The garden situated at the foot of the Phulchoki, is enveloped by lush green hills and an amiable backdrop of natural diversity.

It is widely regarded as a center of plant conservation, education, research and recreation. It spreads over an area of 82 ha. of varying topography, among which, 40 ha. has been developed into various garden units. It is surrounded by natural evergreen forest dominated by Schima-Castanospsis and Alnus.

It comprises a natural plant landscape with various thematic gardens like physics garden, biodiversity education garden, rock garden, taxonomic family garden, fern garden, special garden, Japanese style garden, VVIP plantation garden.  This botanical garden conserves about 1000 plant species including ferns, 26 species of gymnosperms, 883 species of angiosperms, 91 species of Pteridophyte. A natural stream (Godawari) runs through the garden as well.

It is an internationally recognized botanical garden and a member of Botanic Garden Conservation International (BGCI).

This garden opens daily from 9.00 AM to 4.00 PM during the month of November to February and from 9.00 AM to 5.00 PM for the rest of the months.

The botanical garden is not just suited for students for their educational tours, it also provides an ideal place for families and groups to enjoy peace and relaxing day off. It also is a haven for naturalists bird watching and flora and fauna that is not too far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is also an ideal place for film and video crews to capture scenic greenery and landscape as well
